The Salt Lake Tribune continues to churn out Associated Press coverage on its front page as its top news. On Sunday night, I did not catch a single minute of the Super Bowl on my way back to Milwaukee from covering the Meyo Invitational at Notre Dame for Flotrack on Friday and Saturday.
Admittedly, I’m not the biggest NFL follower (I do hope to get into Fantasy Football in 2013 to change that.) I tracked the game through Twitter and with this class’ assignment in the back of my mind, I looked at the Salt Lake Tribune’s twitter page to see what their coverage is like. They rarely had score updates and coming from a city with a pro football team, I did not expect much.
The only positive that I saw from their coverage was one original story on a Utah native playing for the Ravens. What had the potential for a long form story post-victory, was just a short feature.
As far as analysis goes, the columnists on the site could not go through Monday without writing about Sunday’s game. Again it was a conversation that is being made all throughout the morning, as to whether or not Joe Flacco is an elite quarterback. Yawn! This is the same conversation that is made after every Super Bowl. Just last year there were these same talks about Eli Manning. I believe a more original topic would have been better.
One last observation I’ve made is that these columns do not receive as many comments as my last beat with the Tampa Bay Times. Any sort of criticism whether good or bad I'm sure would be appreciated by the writers as far as getting feedback on their work.
