About
Chris Chavez was born and raised in Queens, New York and spent the first 18 years of his life in the Big Apple. In the fall of 2011, he decided to take his talents to Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis.
Xavier High School in Manhattan was Chavez's home for four years as he wrote for the school's newspaper, The Xavier Review, and sprinted for the track team. It was his time as the sports editor and editor-in-chief of The Review that fueled his passion for sports writing. Chavez made the transition from the Xavier Review to The Marquette Tribune quickly as he joined the sports desk in his freshman year.
He continued writing for The Tribune for two years as he covered Marquette athletics on the club and Division I level. He was promoted to assistant sports editor, before leaving to work full-time for Flotrack.org as a staff writer. Chavez was responsible for previewing, recapping, analyzing and breaking all the latest news in the track and field world. In the summer of 2013, Chavez traveled out to eight countries across the Atlantic ocean to provide on-site coverage from the European track an field circuit.
Before his senior year at Marquette, Chavez was selected as a member of the Sports Journalism Institute's Class of 2014 and would go on to intern at ESPN in Bristol, Conn. under Patrick Stiegman, ESPN's vice president and editorial director. Chavez helped provide content and grow ESPN's coverage of the World Marathon Majors for the Endurance section of ESPN.com. Chavez covered marathons in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Boston and London for the site. He also wrote for ESPN's bi-lingual vertical One Nacion, which launched in 2015.
Upon graduation from Marquette, Chavez joined Sports Illustrated as a fellow for the SI Wire news team. He also traveled to Europe to cover the lead-up to the 2015 IAAF World Championships with stops in Paris, Lausanne, Madrid and Belgium. Chavez will be a member of the Sports Illustrated team at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
