The Salt Lake Tribune surprised its readers last fall when the newspaper announced that they endorsed President Barack Obama for re-election. This was coming from a newspaper with a predominantly Mormon population and Governor Mitt Romney helped bring the Winter Olympics to Salt Lake City in 2002. Utah ended up going red after election day, but the Tribune continued its support of President Obama with solid inauguration coverage on Monday.
Most of the articles and features on the site were from the Associated Press. One original piece that I liked was the "News Roundup", where quick points were made about the day from MLK's Bible to Joe Biden hinting at a 2016 bid. Asking readers to send their photos if they were in Washington D.C. was also an effective way of interacting with the audience.
Being Utah, of course some comments were negative with criticism of how the inauguration was the headlining story with Martin Luther King Jr. taking the back seat for the day. I did not really see that to be entirely true. The site teased two Associated Press stories about MLK and how they were related to Obama's inauguration. On Sunday, a short homage to King was posted on the site.
If one were to go back to the site on Tuesday, very little would be found on the front page about the inauguration. It is not that there was an overload of new content for the day, but the attention in Salt Lake right now is on the Sundance Film Festival. It's one of the few times of the year when the rest of the country has their attention on Salt Lake City, so their attention and coverage is fixated on one of their big events.
I would have liked to have seen more videos and photos on the front page with the inauguration. There is a photo gallery, but nothing that makes the Tribune's content stand out from that seen on other sites like CNN.
There was no mention of Beyonce on the site from Sunday to this very moment (a sentence in an entertainment link dump does not count.) Really? Lip synched or not, that was a great performance and it's Beyonce! The staff at the Salt Lake Tribune really dropped the ball on providing some quality celebrity/entertainment news. There needs to be a fun and hip approach in some writing to keep an audience.
