This week I decided to dig into some high school sports coverage by the Salt Lake Tribune and found a decent amount of articles for track and cross-country. Each was just a quick write up of results with not much analysis or detail about races. As the Marquette track and field beat writer for the Marquette Tribune, I've written a few profiles on athletes and know what to look for. Salt Lake's profile on jumper Jadon Pace was a pleasant read.
The piece starts off mentioning that he is a runner, but immediately notes what makes him interesting as a choir member and photographer. As noted in class, details like those can be discovered in an interview while asking questions about hobbies or little known facts they would like to share.
The piece goes on to follow that up with what got Pace into the sport, which falls into exposition details that should be shared after starting the story in the present or the most important details. The important detail here is there are more talents to Pace than just athletics. Pace could have been a star football player with his talent, but likes track better as a sport and has been making an impact as a star long jumper in the area.
Quotes from multiple people will provide insight into the person being profiled. In the case of Pace, his mother and father provided a much closer angle than a teammate would give. His coach could give perspective into what the ceiling is for his career as a track athlete. Reporter Martin Renzihofer interviewed the right people, but I would have liked to see some thoughts from a current teammate.
It was a short profile of an up-and-coming athlete, but it gets the job done and sets a similar standard to what can be done for my own projects in thi
