Media coverage of the NCAA Division I Basketball Tournament was not lacking on any news site during the last few days and as a result the 26th Annual Kids Choice Awards were forgotten by many. On Saturday, Nickelodeon aired the award ceremony live from Los Angeles and only the New York Daily News and CBS News picked up the show as news worthy.
C'mon! I would put the Kids Choice Awards right up there with the Oscars as most entertaining...actually possibly more entertaining than the Academy Awards. Where else do you get to see the winner get slimed while giving their acceptance speech? That's right nowhere.
And everyone missed it because college basketball was on. The NCAA Tournament was being held in Salt Lake City, so the Salt Lake Tribune had its fair share of reporters there. There was also original coverage for the BYU Cougars in the NIT, which was nice to see. Yet, the entertainment section lacked exciting content.
CBS News was the model for what coverage of the Kids Choice Awards should be like. They had a recap article which can not be found on many of the other sites. A record breaking number of votes went into this year's award show and they were on hand to report it. That's news. There are 51 photos in their photo gallery for the show, where you can check out celebrities like Sandra Bullock and Justin Timberlake getting slimed, the red carpet outfits worn by Selena Gomez or a snapshot of Pitbull on stage performing. They also made things easier by simply posting a list of winners.
The New York Daily News used the Kids Choice Awards to show off photos of singer Fergie's baby bump. Her husband Josh Duhamel was the show's host and they put up a video of him talking about baby names. As of Sunday night, this was still the leading story on the Daily News' website. Meanwhile, the Salt Lake Tribune headlines a local performance of the Odd Couple. Aside from locals thinking of going to the show or the actors in the show, it does not appeal to many. A photo of green goo falling on celebrities will get the attention of people. Even the crazy headline of "Kristen Stewart Wins Best Actress" will have people craving for more details. Yes, she did win best actress for 2012 and was butt-kicker.
The Sundance Festival has passed and once again there is very little to entertain the people of Salt Lake City. Enjoy the Utah Jazz, while the regular season is still going on.
